I’ve recently finished reading an inspirational book, Born to Run. Its about running but also about ways of living. The narrative follows the author’s (Christopher McDougall) quest to find a cure for his running injuries which leads him to a tribe of cliff-dwelling, barefoot running Indians, living in a canyon in Mexico. As the book progresses the author explores the history of long-distance running in America and introduces a host of characters who are promoting various approaches to long-distance running, barefoot being one of them. McDougall also looks at how eating simple, ‘poor’ food contributes to endurance and how being compassionate to people can actually improve your running.
As I’m running the Two Oceans this year and part-hippie, this book is right up my street but it is a fascinating read for anyone interested in distance running. Plus its introduced me to Vibram Fivefingers ‘barefoot’ shoes. I’m keen to get a pair and try them out.
